Phillip Phillips wins American Idol 2012 Phillip Phillips, a bluesy Georgia guitar man, has been crowned the new American Idol after defeating teenager Jessica Sanchez in record viewer voting. He was the fifth male Idol winner in a row. Phillips, 21, a pawn shop worker from Leesburg, Georgia, looked stunned after host Ryan Seacrest announced his name, and then wordlessly accepted a hug from Sanchez and congratulations from his fellow finalists. He dissolved into tears as he sang Homem the song that may be his first single. Phillips received the winning share of the record-high 132m votes cast after his final showdown with high school student Sanchez, 16, of Chula Vista, California. The vote count was not announced. His victory extends the American Idol winning streak for men to five consecutive seasons. The last female to win was 17-year-old Jordin Sparks in 2007. Sparks was among the guest stars who helped fill out the two-hour finale show, among them Rihanna, Neil Diamond, Reba McEntire, Chaka Khan and John Fogarty. American Idol judges Steven Tyler, with his band Aerosmith, and Jennifer Lopez also performed. Besides music there was a marriage proposal for the season 11 finale: former contestants Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo got engaged on stage. Young, a season five finalist, told Seacrest that he and DeGarmo had just moved in together. Then Young got down on one knee and popped the question to her. “I love you to death. You’re my best friend,” Young said in his …
Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits
The oddball beat the diva on “American Idol” Wednesday night. Quirky Phillip Phillips soared over big-voiced Jessica Sanchez to become to latest winner in the show’s 11 year history, based on what host Ryan Seacrest said was an unprecedented 132 million votes. The “Idol” reveal took place during a star-packed, two-hour event, featuring John Fogerty, Chaka Khan, Rihanna, Neil Diamond and a reunion of Steven Tyler’s Aerosmith. Phillips’ gender may have had something to do with his win. The last five “Idol” winners have all been male, reflecting the especially feverish voting of the show’s screechy, young female members. The area of Phillips’ birth may have given him a boost as well. He’s from Leesburg, Ga. Nearly every winner in “Idol” history has come from the South or the Midwest. Sanchez hails from Chula Vista, Calif. In some ways, 21-year-old Phillips represents the odder choice. He has a far less conventional voice than Sanchez, relying on a series of tics and moans that can suggest Dave Matthews suffering from a monumental migraine.By contrast, Sanchez has a beautiful tone, lungs of steel and, when she’s given the right song, a soulful edge. At times, she can sound like radio’s ideal mash-up of Mariah, Whitney and Beyonce. Sanchez’s loss robbed Idol of a number of firsts. Had she won, she would have been the series’ first Latina winner, as well as its first of Asian heritage. (She’s Mexican-Filipino.) She would also have been the youngest “Idol” ever.
