There was a whole lot of “meh” during this week’s “American Idol” performance show, and it should’ve been fairly obvious from the start just who the endangered contestant was. But, because the voting public is a fickle and capricious monster, I’m perennially braced for a shocking result. (I really didn’t see Hollie, Elise or Skylar lasting longer than Colton, for example, even though I preferred all three.) As with all “Idol” results shows, the May 10 episode was packed full of juicy generally mediocre performances from people who are only tenuously still musically relevant — this week, those lucky time-wasters were judge Jennifer Lopez, and lackluster winner of yesteryear, David Cook. But since such diversions are what YouTube and the fast-forward button were invented for, let’s skip to this week’s elimination result.

Steven Tyler announced he is stepping away as a judge on American Idol to focus on new music with Aerosmith! bit.ly – Subscribe Now! Facebook.com – Like Us! Twitter.com – Follow Us! American Idol judge Steven Tyler just announced that he will be stepping down from his judging chair. The Aerosmith rocker joined the show two seasons ago, and helped further the careers of winners Scotty McCreery and Phillip Phillips. In a statement released by Fox, Steven said, “After some long…hard…thoughts…I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress ‘American Idol’ before she boils my rabbit.” Incase you guys are a tad lost by his words, yes—that was a reference to Fatal Attraction. Steven explained that doing Idol distanced him from making music, saying, ” I’ve got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band.” He concluded by announcing that the next few years would be dedicated to making new music, calling it “the ultimate auditory takeover.” You guys can rest assured there was no bad blood between Steven and the Idol execs—he called the judging experience “over the top fun” but thinks it’s time to bring rock back! Aerosmith will be dropping a new album on November 6 and will tour shortly after. What’s interesting is that this news comes JUST HOURS after JLO strongly hinted that she’d be leaving the judges panel—with both Steven and JLO gone, we’re left with Randy Jackson and two (MAYBE 3?) open seats. Vote below on who your dream panel would be—and

Blues singer Phillip Phillips won the finale of “American Idol” on Wednesday night after a record 132 million votes were cast. The 21-year-old from Leesburg, Ga., beat Jessica Sanchez, 16, of Chula Vista, Calif., for the title in the show’s 11th season. Before strapping on his guitar and performing his winner’s single, “Home,” Phillips took a moment to thank all those involved in the production of the FOX show, plus the fans. “It’s been such an honor to be up on this stage playing with everybody. Thanks to all the fans out there,” he said. “Thanks for voting for us.” Sanchez added, “Thanks to the whole crew at ‘American Idol’ that made the show happen.” Last year’s contest between winner Scotty McCreery and runner-up Lauren Alaina drew more than 122 million votes. Phillips, who worked in a pawn shop before his time on “Idol,” won a recording contract as part of his prize.

Skylar Laine may have belted “The Show Must Go On,” but her American Idol journey came to a close last night. The 18-year-old country firecracker, who made it into the top five, wasn’t shy about her desire to win the competition, so viewers were surprised when she told Ryan Seacrest she was “relieved” to be going home. We chatted with Skylar, who clarifies the comments she made after her elimination and reveals she wasn’t surprised to be voted off the Fox hit show.

Wednesday night’s “American Idol.” Sadly, the attention was partially taken from them by the rumor that Jennifer Lopez was leaving the show. The suggestion was that she was “too busy.” This surely was incomplete. The entire version must have been that she was “too busy to have found any new scriptwriters of platitudes.” Still, the contestants, if you can remember them, had to perform three songs: one chosen by the judges, one by themselves and one by Uncle Jimmy Iovine.First was Joshua Ledet. Randy Jackson said he and his team had chosen Etta James’ “I’d Rather Be Blind.” Ledet continued in his retro vein. He fondled the retro mike, as if he was a fortune-teller and it was a crystal ball. The Ledet formula is to start slow and build to an extremely forceful climax. This was excellent, professional and veering toward being slightly too sophisticated for the little girls in their pink fluffy bedrooms who might decide the winner. Steven Tyler called it “surreal.” Jennifer Lopez called him a “throwback.” In the audience, Heejun Han talked about his “work in progress hairstyle,” but not about his singing career.

American Idol cut Hollie Cavanagh and determined its Final 3 eleventh-season finalists during Thursday night’s live results show broadcast on Fox. Cavanagh, an 18-year-old from McKinney, TX, became the tenth finalist sent home from American Idol’s eleventh season after she received the fewest home viewer votes following Wednesday night’s performance show. The performance show featured the Top 4 finalists each performing two songs, with the first having a connection to California and the second being a tune that inspired them and they wished they had written themselves. “Looking back from last year, I can definitely see a change from then and now. I think that’s when I knew this is what I can do for the rest of my life. Being on the show has given me confidence and I believe so much more in myself. It’s perfect, you know?” Cavanagh said following her ouster.

American Idol Recap – Skylar Laine Eliminated Season 11 Top 4 Revealed. Skylar Laine — a country-singing teen with a passion for boots, mud, rockin’ out, and large-scale geometric earrings — was eliminated on Thursday’s American Idol results show. A fiery onstage presence ’til the end, she threw her final network-televised Skylar Party (maybe?) (probably) and sang the hay-ul out of Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder and Lead” for her last hurrah. I loved the cheesy headlines emblazoned on newsprint in the Great Idol Oval: “SKYLAR STARTED SHOOTING FROM THE START: Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler blown away.” (Ryan wanted to be included, Ryan!) tvrecaps.ew.com American Idol, TV Replay, Video, American Idol Fox, Joshua Ledet, Skylar Laine, American Idol Season 11, American Idol Top 4, Hollie Cavagh, Jessica Sanchez, Phillip Phillips, TV News

American Idol’: Jermaine Jones Disqualified For Hidden Criminal Past. Jermaine Jones is apparently out on “American Idol.” The 25-year-old vocal instructor from Pine Hill, NJ, tweeted Tuesday night that he no longer would be on the Fox singing contest. The Hollywood Reporter said Jones tweeted, “Awww I will no longer b on the show.” His Twitter account has since been deleted. A Fox spokeswoman declined to comment on the matter or confirm his tweet. TMZ reports Jones will be kicked off during the Wed., March 14 broadcast. He allegedly hid a criminal record — an incident involved violence — from producers who then confronted Jones on camera. In addition to hiding his criminal past, TMZ said Jones lied to cops by giving them fake names after arrests. Jones reportedly has outstanding warrants.

The oddball beat the diva on “American Idol” Wednesday night. Quirky Phillip Phillips soared over big-voiced Jessica Sanchez to become to latest winner in the show’s 11 year history, based on what host Ryan Seacrest said was an unprecedented 132 million votes. The “Idol” reveal took place during a star-packed, two-hour event, featuring John Fogerty, Chaka Khan, Rihanna, Neil Diamond and a reunion of Steven Tyler’s Aerosmith. Phillips’ gender may have had something to do with his win. The last five “Idol” winners have all been male, reflecting the especially feverish voting of the show’s screechy, young female members. The area of Phillips’ birth may have given him a boost as well. He’s from Leesburg, Ga. Nearly every winner in “Idol” history has come from the South or the Midwest. Sanchez hails from Chula Vista, Calif. In some ways, 21-year-old Phillips represents the odder choice. He has a far less conventional voice than Sanchez, relying on a series of tics and moans that can suggest Dave Matthews suffering from a monumental migraine.By contrast, Sanchez has a beautiful tone, lungs of steel and, when she’s given the right song, a soulful edge. At times, she can sound like radio’s ideal mash-up of Mariah, Whitney and Beyonce. Sanchez’s loss robbed Idol of a number of firsts. Had she won, she would have been the series’ first Latina winner, as well as its first of Asian heritage. (She’s Mexican-Filipino.) She would also have been the youngest “Idol” ever.
